Are you interested in urban politicians and environmental activities in your area or for the local community in general? Do you want to have an influence on how the city develops and implements solutions in the area of adaptation to climate change? The second edition of the Urban Competence Program is for you! The recruitment has been extended to 29 June 2020!

The Urban Lab Gdynia Urban Competence Program is a course of practical knowledge about the city for residents and residents. Its first edition – dedicated to social participation – has been completed by eleven beginner city leaders and women leaders. The second edition is ahead of us. The goal – to broaden the competences of future animators and animators of social change, to create even more effective tools for cooperation with residents and residents in the area of adapting to the climate change in the city.

– The first edition of the Municipal Competence Program has shown that Gdynia’s women and men are interested in their city, the mechanisms that govern it and the possibilities of influencing the changes taking place – says Michał Guć, Gdynia’s Vice-President for Innovation. – The workshops, which took place during the pilot Municipal Competence Program, identified new leaders and new leaders of social changes in Gdynia. Now we again give a chance to gain new knowledge. The second edition of the program is devoted to adaptation to climate change and we will implement it online. We are adapting the way of preparing the program to the current situation, taking care to ensure safety of the participants on the one hand, and on the other hand to provide knowledge consistent with the main theme of the cycle.

Every person willing to participate is asked in the form to tell a short story about themselves and their ideas for the city – micro innovations for adaptation to climate change. We are waiting for applications until 29 June. They can be sent by post to the address of the Social Innovation Laboratory (31 Żeromskiego Street, 81-346 Gdynia with the note on the envelope “UrbanLab Gdynia Urban Competence Program”) or send a scan of the completed and signed form to the e-mail address: urbanlab@lis.gdynia.pl with the title of the message as in the note on the envelope.

The Urban Competence Program consists of three modules. Within the framework of the educational module, participants will learn what the city management structure looks like, what legal and economic conditions influence the decisions made, what laws govern the city budget. In the thematic module of the second edition experts and experts will talk about how climate change affects the functioning of a city, what is mitigation and adaptation to climate change in individual, local and city-wide actions. The third practical module will be an opportunity to learn about the principles of effective social communication, tools for working with the group and ways of motivation to act together, as well as specific methods of project work necessary to jointly develop ideas for urban innovation for adaptation to climate change. The course will end with the preparation of the idea of urban micro innovations! What is an idea for a good urban climate, how to turn it into a project, what to do to encourage the city to implement it? These are the challenges of the urban adventure in the second edition of the Urban Competence Program. We invite you!

From all the applications of candidates and candidates the Selection Committee will choose no more than 16 participants and participants.

Classes under the Program include seven interrelated online meetings held at the turn of June and July on weekdays between 17:00 and 21:00. The condition for completing the course is participation in no less than 80 percent of the organized meetings and preparation and submission of the final thesis – description of micro innovations related to adaptation to climate change in the city.
